TSS is a rare but serious and sometimes fatal disease that can be associated with tampon use. It is caused by Staphylococcus aurea, a bacteria commonly found on other parts of the body (e.g. skin/nose). Anyone can get TSS. About half of TSS cases are associated with tampon use; the remainder occurs in men, children, and women who are not menstruating. The incidence of TSS is estimated to be between 1 and 17 cases of TSS per 100,000 menstruating women and girls per year. TSS is treatable, but early recognition and treatment are important. The warning signs of TSS include: A sudden high fever (usually 102° F/38.8° C or higher), vomiting, diarrhea, a rash that looks like a sunburn, dizziness, muscle aches, or fainting or near fainting when standing up. TSS can rapidly progress from flu-like symptoms to a serious illness that can be fatal. If you have one or more of these warning signs, immediately remove your tampon and contact a doctor. Tell them your symptoms, that you were using tampons and think you may have TSS. Consult your doctor before using tampons again if you have had TSS warning signs in the past. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about TSS or tampon use. Always use lowest absorbency to meet your flow needs. Studies indicate higher absorbency tampons increase the risk of getting TSS. Therefore, to reduce the risk of TSS, use a tampon with the minimum absorbency needed for your flow. You can reduce the risk of tampon-associated TSS by alternating with pads. ATTENTION: TAMPONS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME (TSS). TSS IS A RARE BUT SERIOUS DISEASE THAT MAY CAUSE DEATH. READ AND SAVE THE ENCLOSED INFORMATION. THE RISK OF TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME (TSS) INCREASES WITH HIGHER ABSORBENCY. IN ORDER TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF TSS, YOU SHOULD USE THE LOWEST ABSORBENCY THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS
LET'S LEARN HOW TO INSERT A TAMPON. Remember to wash your hands (before and after insertion), then open the wrapper. 1. While sitting/squatting over the toilet, hold the grip. 2. Insert applicator until your fingers reach your body. 3. Once fully in, press the "PUSHER" all the way in. 4. Remove applicator and dispose of properly. If it doesn't feel right, take out the tampon and try again. Designed to get the tampon inside your body. Once inserted and the tampon is placed, you immediately remove and dispose of the applicator. USE FOR 8 HOURS MAXIMUM. DIRECTIONS FOR USE ENCLOSED. Your first time? Start here. Take a deep breath…and relax. It's much easier to insert a tampon when you're relaxed. When using a tampon for the first time, choose a day when your flow is heavy. A heavier flow makes it easier for your tampon to comfortably slide into your body. To remove: When you're ready to remove… Relax your muscles. Slowly and gently pull the removal string downward at the same angle you used to insert the tampon. Unlike a pad, a tampon is worn inside your body, which means you can't see if it's full and ready to change. There are a few helpful ways to know if it is time to change. While you are still learning how frequently to change, we recommend checking every 2-3 hrs. Tampons can be worn for up to 8 hours. Use tampons only during menstruation. Change your tampon at least every 4-8 hrs. If you'd like to use a tampon overnight, insert a new tampon before going to bed and replace immediately upon waking. You can wear a tampon overnight for up to 8 hours. If you plan to sleep longer than 8 hours, use a pad instead. Always remove your used tampon before inserting a new one. Be sure to remove the last tampon you use
